Berdazimer (Zelsuvmi)

What is berdazimer?

Berdazimer (Zelsuvmi) is a topical prescription medication used for molluscum contagiosum. It is a newer at-home treatment option that gives families an alternative to office procedures or watchful waiting in selected cases.

Because molluscum is common in children and can be frustrating when lesions keep spreading, an at-home prescription option may be appealing for some patients and parents.

How does berdazimer work?

Berdazimer is a nitric-oxide-releasing topical medication. Nitric oxide can help create a local effect that makes the skin less hospitable to the lesions and may help treated bumps resolve over time.

This gives it a different role from destructive office treatments such as cantharidin, cryotherapy, or curettage.

What are possible side effects of berdazimer?

Possible side effects can include:

  • Redness where the medication is applied

  • Irritation or burning

  • Dryness

  • Tenderness or skin changes at treated sites

Because molluscum often affects young children, families should review application instructions carefully and contact their dermatologist if irritation becomes excessive.

How is berdazimer used?

Berdazimer is applied at home to molluscum lesions as directed by your provider. It is generally used for adults and children old enough for the labeled treatment approach.

At-home therapy can be helpful for patients with multiple lesions or for families who prefer to avoid repeated office procedures, but it still requires careful use and follow-up if the skin becomes too irritated.
