Topical Minoxidil (Rogaine)

What is Topical Minoxidil?

Topical minoxidil is a hair-regrowth medication applied directly to the scalp. In dermatology, it is most commonly used for pattern hair loss (alopecia), including male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss. It is available in over-the-counter solution and foam formulations, and dermatologists also sometimes include it as part of broader treatment plans for other hair-loss conditions.

How does Topical Minoxidil work?

Topical minoxidil helps stimulate hair growth, reduce further hair loss, and support thicker-looking hair in some patients. It does not restore a full head of hair in every patient, and response varies from person to person.

What are possible side effects of Topical Minoxidil?

Common side effects include scalp irritation, dryness, scaling, itching, and redness. Some patients also notice a temporary increase in shedding early in treatment, and unwanted facial hair can occur if the medication spreads beyond the scalp. More serious warning signs include chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness or faintness, unexplained weight gain, or swelling of the hands or feet.

How is Topical Minoxidil used?

Topical minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp, not the hair. How often it is used depends on the product. Some patients may notice improvement after about 3 to 4 months, but it often takes 6 to 12 months to judge benefit. Continued use is needed to maintain results, and using more than directed does not make it work faster or better.

Topical minoxidil is not the right treatment for every type of hair loss. Product labeling advises against self-treating sudden, patchy, unexplained, or scarring-related hair loss, and it should not be applied to an inflamed, infected, irritated, or painful scalp. It may also be harmful if used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Because different causes of hair loss can look similar, a dermatology evaluation can be helpful before treatment begins.
