Clascoterone (Winlevi)

What is clascoterone?

Clascoterone (Winlevi) is a topical prescription medication used for acne vulgaris. It is a newer acne treatment that works differently from retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical antibiotics.

It can be especially helpful in patients whose acne has a hormonal component, although it is used more broadly than that in acne care. That gives it a unique place among topical acne medications.

How does clascoterone work?

Clascoterone works by blocking androgen receptors in the skin. Androgens can contribute to oil production and acne development. By reducing that hormonal signaling at the skin level, clascoterone can help decrease acne activity.

This is different from treatments that mainly unclog pores, peel the skin, or target acne bacteria.

What are possible side effects of clascoterone?

Possible side effects can include:

  • Mild redness or irritation

  • Dryness

  • Burning or stinging

  • Peeling in some patients

As with many acne medications, irritation is often most noticeable early in treatment. Using it within a broader acne routine may help balance benefit with tolerability.

How is clascoterone used?

Clascoterone is applied to acne-prone skin as directed by your provider. It is often used as part of a broader acne plan that may also include retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or other topical or oral treatments depending on acne type and severity.

This medication is a useful option for patients who want a non-antibiotic prescription treatment for acne, especially when hormonal influence, oiliness, or long-term antibiotic avoidance are part of the discussion.
