Roflumilast (Zoryve)
What is Roflumilast?
Roflumilast (Zoryve) is a nonsteroidal topical medication used in dermatology for several inflammatory skin conditions. It is part of a group of medications called PDE4 inhibitors and is commonly discussed for plaque psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis.
One reason roflumilast has become an important medication is that it offers a steroid-free option for patients who need treatment on sensitive areas such as the face, skin folds, or other sites where long-term topical steroid use may be less desirable.
How does roflumilast work?
Roflumilast works by blocking phosphodiesterase-4, or PDE4, an enzyme involved in inflammatory signaling. By reducing this pathway, roflumilast can help calm inflammation, decrease redness and scaling, and improve symptoms such as itching.
Different formulations may be used in different settings, which allows roflumilast to fit a range of common dermatology problems.
What are possible side effects of Roflumilast?
Roflumilast is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects can include:
Mild irritation, burning, or stinging where the medication is applied
Redness
Itching
Headache in some patients
Diarrhea or nausea in some patients, though this is less common with topical use
Patients should let their dermatologist know if irritation becomes significant or if the medication is not fitting well into the treatment plan.
How is Roflumilast used?
Roflumilast is used topically as directed by your dermatologist. The exact instructions can vary depending on the formulation and the condition being treated. In general, a thin layer is applied to affected skin areas, avoiding the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes unless specifically directed otherwise.
Because it is steroid-free, roflumilast can be a useful option for patients who need ongoing treatment or who are treating more sensitive body areas.
