Benzoyl Peroxide
What is Benzoyl Peroxide?
Benzoyl peroxide is a well-established topical treatment that is commonly used for acne because it helps reduce acne-causing bacteria and unclog pores. It is also sometimes used for folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurativa. In addition to traditional washes, creams, and gels, there is now a rosacea-specific benzoyl peroxide formulation called Epsolay that is designed for inflammatory rosacea bumps and pustules in appropriate patients.
How Does Benzoyl Peroxide Work?
Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce bacteria on the skin and also has pore-clearing effects, which is one reason it remains a foundation of acne treatment. Rosacea-specific benzoyl peroxide products such as Epsolay use a formulation designed to improve tolerability on more sensitive facial skin.
What Are Possible Side Effects of Benzoyl Peroxide?
While benzoyl peroxide is beneficial, it might lead to certain skin reactions. Common side effects include:
Peeling
Redness
Burning or tingling sensation
These reactions are generally mild. Using a moisturizer can help counteract these effects. Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach towels, pillowcases, clothing, or hair.
How is Benzoyl Peroxide Used?
Benzoyl peroxide is available in several strengths and formulations, including washes, creams, gels, and prescription options. Many patients do best by starting slowly and increasing use as tolerated. When it is being used for rosacea, a product such as Epsolay may be chosen instead of a standard acne benzoyl peroxide product because it is designed differently. Sunscreen and a gentle moisturizer are often helpful alongside treatment.
