Dupilumab (Dupixent)
What Is Dupilumab?
Dupilumab (Dupixent) is an injectable biologic medication used in dermatology for several inflammatory skin diseases. It is most commonly used for atopic dermatitis, but it is also used for prurigo nodularis, chronic spontaneous urticaria, and bullous pemphigoid.
Dupilumab was one of the most important newer treatment advances in eczema because it offered a targeted option that does not broadly suppress the immune system in the same way as many older systemic medications.
How does Dupilumab Work?
Dupilumab works by blocking interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 signaling, two important drivers of type 2 inflammation. In practical terms, this can help reduce itch, calm inflammation, improve rash, and decrease flare frequency in the right patients.
What are Possible Side Effects of Dupilumab?
Possible side effects of dupilumab can include:
Injection site reactions
Eye irritation, dry eyes, or conjunctivitis
Eyelid inflammation
Cold sores in some patients
Serious allergic reactions can occur but are uncommon. Patients should also tell their dermatologist if eye symptoms develop or worsen during treatment.
How is Dupilumab Used?
Dupilumab is given by injection on a schedule directed by your provider. Many patients can learn to give the injections at home after training. The medication is stored in the refrigerator and is usually allowed to warm to room temperature before injection.
This medication is often considered when topical treatments alone are not enough or when disease is more widespread, more persistent, or affecting quality of life in a major way.
